This past month, September, was a busy one for the Indiana NWTF. On the 19th we held our annual calling contest at the Bass Pro Shops in Clarksville with a total of 29 callers competing. I want to give a public thank you to Bass Pro Shops, for furnishing not only the facility but also all of the awards and prizes. Jim and Tina Tucker did a great job at organizing the event – thanks guys!

On September 26th and 27th the NWTF was well represented at the 1st annual “Hoosier Outdoor Experience”. I have no official count but understand that approximately 15,000 to16,000 people attended this event. Thanks to the hard work of Earl and Mary Beth Griswold and many other volunteers we were able to work with many youth and adults that have never experienced the shooting sports or used a turkey call! Thanks to all that helped at this event over the two days – I may be prejudice, but I think we had one of the best, if not the best booth at the show!

As I think about these 2 events and the number of kids involved I am simply amazed. It brings back many memories of my first experiences in the outdoors. As a kid, I lived next door to my grandparents. My grandfather was retired and I am sure “tired” after having me tag along everyday, but he never showed it or complained. He was not known to be a patient man but he was with me. I am sure I tried those patience everyday at least once or twice.

When I think of him I remember things like his smile, his whole face would light up, his slow methodical walk, and how big his hands seemed to be, they probably weren’t, but heck, I was just a kid. This man gave me my first gun, a double barrel 16 gauge that had been passed down from my great-grandfather. I hunted with this gun for several years but have since retired it. I guarantee you that every time I look at it the memories come flooding back, and a smile that lights up my whole face will appear. My grandpa was my teacher of the outdoors, one of my instructors of life, the kind of grandfather I want to be for my grandchildren, and he was and continues to be one of my true heroes even after being gone all these years.

Interestingly, I saw these things in the faces of the kids, parents, and grandparents at both of the events I mentioned earlier. I saw adults willing to share their knowledge, kids acting like sponges taking in all that they could, parents taking an active role in the lives of their children, and grandparents – well with smiles that made their whole face light up! If anyone ever doubts what we do as NWTF volunteers makes a difference, can change a child’s life, or help them become better adults, all they need do is attend one of these events or any Jakes event to see the results. But beware because you will probably have the time of your life and end up with that smile that lights up your whole face!

Respectfully,
Steve Gage
